JOHN RICHARD CASEY 

OCT. 30TH 1940 – DEC 1ST 2023

John Casey, 83, a beloved figure in his community and a passionate nature lover, passed away on December 1st, 2023. Born on October 30, 1940, in Tunnel Hill, Illinois, John was the middle child of Edith Opal Burton and Randolph Casey and grew up alongside his seven siblings. Throughout his life, John found joy in the woods and the beauty of nature surrounding him.

John’s academic journey led him to graduate from Vienna High School in 1958, and he pursued higher education at SIU Carbondale, and also Eastern Illinois University. During these formative years, John developed a deep love for baseball and aspired to pursue a professional career in the sport.

Although his baseball dreams did not materialize, John’s entrepreneurial spirit and business acumen propelled him toward success. He ventured into banking and real estate, demonstrating his creativity and drive in every endeavor. John’s dedication led him to rise through the ranks at Germania Federal Savings and Loan in Alton, Illinois, starting in the mid-1970s. In 1982, he transferred to Mt. Vernon, Illinois, continuing his professional journey as a bank manager for Germania, and eventually took a role at First National Bank of Mt. Vernon. Later, he briefly worked for Banterra Bank before returning to Alton in 1998. He enjoyed many years working at Brown Realtors of Edwardsville, Illinois and eventually retired with Re-MAX Realtors of Alton.

While excelling in his professional career, John also found time to indulge in his passions. An avid and prolific golfer, he achieved numerous victories in tournaments throughout his life. Furthermore, John possessed a genuine desire to give back to his community. He actively organized and implemented innumerable fundraisers, particularly during his involvement with the Jaycees and Elks, showcasing his dedication to supporting causes close to his heart.

Those fortunate enough to have known John experienced firsthand his magnetic personality and quick sense of humor. His natural ability to entertain and tell captivating stories left a lasting impression on all who crossed his path. Additionally, John’s creativity extended to writing, where he penned over 400 stories, some of which were published in the Alton Telegraph, Vienna Times, and a book, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire.

John’s journey in love led him to be married twice. He is survived by his son, Shan Casey (Jay Domen) of Boston, whom he cherished deeply. Sister Mary Ellen Davis (Lee) of Vienna, VA, older brother Will Casey (Catherine) of Bastrop, TX, nephews Bruce Wilkerson (Monique) of Swansea, IL, Eric Leber (Erin) of Montana, and dozens of grand nephews and nieces.

John Casey will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and the community he called home. Everyone will fondly remember his contributions to his profession, his love for nature, and his commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. May his spirit and infectious charisma continue to inspire us all.

A celebration of life was held on April 19th of 2024.
